The Valentine’s Day: Lover’s Holiday

Valentine’s Day is popularly known as lovers’ holiday. It is celebrated on every February 14 in the name of St. Valentine. February has been a long month of romance. On this day flowers and gifts are exchanged among loved ones.
According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first ‘Valentine’ greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl who was the jailor’s daughter. She used to meet him secretly in the prison. Before his death, it was alleged that he wrote a letter, which was signed ‘from your Valentine.’ It is an expression that is in use today too. When the jailor found it, he killed Valentine. Valentine was killed around 270 A.D.
Where some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February. Pope Gelasius declared February 14th St. Valentine Day around 498 A.D. Traditional symbols of Valentine’s Day include hearts, doves and love notes and cupid.
Valentine was also known as a priest who served during the third century in Rome. Emperor Cladius II decided that single man made better soldiers than those with his wives and families. So, he stopped marriage for young men. But valentine secretly got married. So, he was sent to prison by the emperor.
Therefore, Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated in European, Asian, American and other countries all over the world.
